Growing Together
- life at the Spring Garden volunteer camp
Life at the volunteer camp followed a gentle rhythm that balanced structure with flexibility. Our days began with a shared breakfast at 8:00, easing into the morning before gathering as a team at 9:00 to start work. Most of the physical tasks were tackled in the cooler morning hours, followed by a relaxed lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00. In the afternoons, we returned for a couple more hours of work before shifting into free time. Each day closed with a reflection circle, where we shared thoughts, feelings, and experiences, creating space for connection and mutual support.
Rather than following a strict weekly schedule, the flow of the camp evolved organically, shaped by the group’s energy and the needs of the project. The first days were dedicated to getting to know each other, building trust, and learning about the basics of permaculture.
We completed a wide range of tasks and projects, like clearing and organizing the greenhouse, planting seedlings, rebuilding garden beds, and setting up a compost system. We also created new features in the garden, including a small pond, a shaded compost area, and a fire pit, adding both function and beauty to the space.
Beyond the physical work, the camp was rich in cultural exchange and shared experiences. We celebrated Hungarian Easter traditions together, where we spent a day decorating eggs with natural materials, baking sweet bread, and embarking on a playful treasure hunt around the village. One of the highlights was the Open Garden Day, where we welcomed members of the local community, showcased our work, hosted workshops, and shared homemade dishes from our different countries.
Altogether, the camp was a space for learning, collaboration, and connection, where meaningful work and shared moments came together in a truly memorable way.
