Three Weeks That Changed Us – Reflections from the EcoDecor Volunteer Camp

This summer, we spent three transformative weeks at the Manas Garden in Lengyeltóti as part of the EcoDecor Volunteer Camp. What started as a hands-on volunteering experience quickly turned into something much deeper: a vibrant, supportive, and heartfelt community.

Each day followed a well-structured routine, creating a sense of rhythm and safety in an ever-changing environment. We worked in two main shifts—morning and afternoon—with shared meals, rest time, and meaningful evening reflection circles that soon became the highlight of our days.

Our tasks were as diverse as the people involved. We helped prepare for the European Ecovillage Gathering 2025 and Gyüttment Festival, setting up and decorating workshop spaces, making signs, and crafting eco-friendly decorations from natural materials. Kitchen work played a central role, not just in feeding us, but in bonding the group through teamwork. We also helped welcome guests, manage logistics, and keep the space clean and organized.

Of course, challenges emerged—illnesses, communication barriers, and the steep learning curve of living outdoors. But we faced them with resilience and mutual support. Moments of tension, especially in high-pressure times like meal service during events, became opportunities for growth and better cooperation.

The impact of this camp was profound. Volunteers became more confident, open, and independent. Many discovered inner strengths they hadn’t known they had. We formed friendships, learned from each other, and walked away with new knowledge about sustainability, teamwork, and ourselves.

Professionally, we gained insight into event support and community facilitation—while also recognizing the need for more time to actively participate in the events we help organize. Our shared "base" on site became a second home, and the warmth of group circles, lake trips, late-night talks, and laughter stitched us together in unforgettable ways.
