My time in Fót as a volunteer
I can’t believe how quickly the time has passed… it’s already been two months! It’s hard to make a short summary of this period because we’ve had so many wonderful activities. I enjoy my time in Fót by being close to the community and contributing in different ways. I love that the activities are so diverse and that every day I get to go somewhere new: the kindergarten, the Waldorf school, the Folk Art high school or the company’s office.
By now, I’ve gotten to know all the children in the Maci group at the kindergarten and they know me too. I love spending time with them, doing all sorts of activities together, from drawing and dancing to practicing English. It melted my heart that from the very beginning, the children started giving me drawings; on my very first day, one of them even made a drawing of me.
In both high schools, there are many classes we visit, so at first it felt a bit overwhelming, but now I’m used to it. The teachers are incredibly kind and helpful, especially when guiding us through the English classes. I enjoy every conversation I’ve had with the students on different topics. I love learning about Hungary from their perspective while also sharing things about Romanian culture.
In my free time, I enjoy being with the other volunteers by cooking together, exploring new places or going to youth events in Budapest. So far, I’ve managed to organise a few trips to Lake Balaton (Keszthely, Balatonfüred) and Visegrád and I’ve also visited many places in Budapest.
At the beginning of October, I participated in the On-arrival training in Budapest for 5 days. During those days, I learned so much about volunteering, Hungarian culture and how to adapt to it. The training gave me many insights that will help not only throughout my volunteering program but also in my personal life. At the end of October, I celebrated my birthday with a small party together with Veronica, Peer and other friends. They prepared some surprises for me and it truly felt special!
Overall, these past two months have been incredibly enriching, filled with meaningful activities, new friendships and personal growth. Every experience has helped me feel more connected, confident and inspired in my volunteering journey. I’m eager to discover what comes next on this journey!
