My first month in Hungary
My first month in Fót has been exciting, full of new impressions and a bit challenging. When I arrived in Fót for the first time everything was new and so different to what I am used to. As I come from Berlin a very busy City and I now found myself in a town of around 20.000 inhabitants. However, I was very curious about it and the changing environment just encouraged me to adapt.
Just after a few days I had adjusted to most of the changes and settled into a daily routine. I got to know all my different workplaces, where I was welcomed very warmly by everyone. The people I get to work with are very friendly and supportive, which helped me a lot to feel comfortable and at home in my new surroundings. Until now I especially enjoyed working at the two high schools in Fót as German is taught at both. This gives me a connection to my home country and it’s very interesting to see how it is to learn German as a foreign language.
In my free time I have explored both Budapest and Fót. I really enjoyed discovering the calming surrounding of Fót and the beautiful architecture of Budapest as I am really interested in architectural styles. In addition, I tried out many restaurants in Budapest that serve delicious Hungarian food. One of my personal highlights was visiting Szentendre, another small town on the other side of the Danube river. I also really liked to watch at the sunsets from a little hill in Fót.
Another exciting part of my first month was the on-arrival meeting with the national agency where I stayed five days in Budapest. There we learned a lot about volunteering, Hungary and the organization of our stay. There I met other German volunteers who are also spending their time in Hungary. It was awesome to exchange our experiences and to build new friendships.
Overall, my first month was very exciting and full of new experiences. I got into my daily life routine and now feel like I knew Fót for much longer than I stayed. I’m surrounded by nice people and learn something new every day.
